This Thursday, the Charles Chaplin cinema was the setting for the official opening of the 45th edition of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, an event that will run until December 15.
Tania Delgado, director of the festival, opened the ceremony in front of a crowded auditorium, highlighting that the event is “a bet for the diverse identity” of Cubans.
In her speech, she emphasized the evolution of the festival throughout its 45-year history, although she stressed that its primary objective remains the same: to create a space for Latin American filmmakers to exchange ideas and showcase their works. “We want to go through all the stages of creating a film,” said Delgado.
In a powerful display of support for Palestine, the festival will feature an exceptional presentation of Palestinian cinema, marking a first for Cuba. This event serves as a tribute to filmmakers who bravely produce their work amid challenging circumstances.
In addition, this year a collaboration has been established between the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños and the New Latin American Cinema Foundation. Delgado also announced an animation forum that seeks to give greater visibility to this creative form in cinema.
The opening included a series of musical acts that animated the atmosphere, with presentations by Cuban pianist Alejandro Falcón and saxophonist César López.
In an emotional moment, the iconic Cuban cartoonist Juan Padrón was honored, highlighting the restoration scheduled for 2024 of two short films starring his celebrated character Elpidio Valdés.
Over the next ten days, the main cinemas in Havana will screen 110 films from 42 countries, including Cuba, Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, and Spain. The selection includes titles such as ‘Ella se queda’ (Mexico), ‘Fenómenos naturales’ (Cuba, Argentina, and France), and ‘Los capítulos perdidos’ (Venezuela).
Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico are the most represented countries in the categories of feature films and animated shorts, while the festival also presents a poster contest and the second edition of the forum dedicated to Juan Padrón.
With this rich offering of films, the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema reaffirms its role as an important meeting point for cinema in the region and as a space for cultural and social reflection.
